Total Time: 35 mins
Servings: 8
Ingredients
- 2 bottles (12 ounces each) of beer or nonalcoholic beer
- 2 tablespoons prepared mustard
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 8 fresh Italian sausage, bratwurst, or Polish sausage links
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium sweet red pepper, coarsely chopped
- 1 medium green pepper, coarsely chopped
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 8 hot dog buns, split
- Spicy brown mustard
Instructions
- Simmer: In a 6-quart stockpot, combine the beer, prepared mustard, and ketchup. Add the sausages and sliced onion, then add enough water to cover if needed. Bring to a simmer and cook uncovered for 10–12 minutes, until a thermometer inserted into a sausage reads 160°F.
- Sauté: Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium heat, heat the oil. Add the bell peppers and chopped onion; cook and stir for 6–8 minutes, until tender. Stir in the garlic and seasonings and cook for 30 seconds more. Remove from heat.
- Grill: Remove the sausages from the beer mixture. Grill them, covered, over medium heat (or broil 4 inches from the heat) for 1–2 minutes per side, until lightly browned.
- Plate: Cut each sausage in half lengthwise. Plate in buns topped with the pepper mixture and brown mustard.
- Serve and Enjoy!
